TIP#1
Any wood or coal fire produces creosote, especially in an airtight
heating system. The use of unseasoned or resinous wood creates
further creosote buildup. Normally, these deposits are flammable
sticky tar-like substances and, if left unchecked, creosote deposits
can drastically reduce the efficiency of a heating unit or cause a
dangerous chimney fire.

Use of one of Rutland’s creosote control products will change the
creosote into a brushable ash. Deposits fall to the bottom of the
chimney for easy removal. Be sure to check elbows often for
blockage as creosote begins to loosen.

Use of our products does not eliminate the need for a regular
professional chimney cleaning. For best results, and maximum
safety, we recommend a professional chimney cleaning along with
preventive maintenance program using one of our creosote
control products.

TIP#2
Fireplace Mortar must be heat cured, or a white powder forms
on the surface and adhesion loss may occur.

Air dry Fireplace Mortar for at least 24 hours but no longer than
30 days before heat curing. Heat cures the mortar, making it
water insoluble.

For deep cracks, use Chimney Sweep Furnace Cement, and layer no
more than 1/2”. Air dry overnight, and then apply another layer.
Heat for final cure.

TIP#3
The exterior of your chimney will last longer with little maintenance.

Repair broken mortar with Chimney Masonry Patch. It dries to
a hard, weather-resistant finish in a natural concrete color.

Use No. 7 Wet or Dry Roof Patch to seal around flashings.

Clean your chimney with Masonry Cleaner. It will remove dirt,
efflorescence (white streaks), acid rain, and stains including
soot and moderate creosote.

Protecting the exterior of your chimney from water penetration will add
years to your chimney. Use Chimney Shield Water Repellent to prevent
deterioration of brick and freeze/thaw damage.
