Happy National S'mores Day!

August 10 is National S'mores Day! Celebrate with your friends and family by a campfire or fire pit and enjoy this special treat!

Consisting of a marshmallow and a layer of chocolate placed between two pieces of graham crackers or a cookie, this traditional sticky treat has found great popularity throughout the United States and Canada.

The name S'mores has evolved from its original yet unofficial name found in a book of recipes published by the Campfire Marshmallows company. Called simply a "Graham Cracker Sandwich" in that 1920s era book, it was already popular with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The name we all know this campfire treat by today began to catch on somewhere around 1938 at summer camps and is a contraction of the words "some more."

If you haven't yet had the opportunity to taste these yummy treats, here's how to enjoy them for yourself!

A marshmallow, usually held by a metal or wooden skewer, is heated over the fire until it is golden brown. Traditionally, the marshmallow is gooey but not burnt, but, depending on individual preference and cooking time, marshmallows can range from barely warm to charred. The roasted marshmallow is then added on top of half of a graham cracker and a piece of chocolate. The second half of the cracker is then added on top, and the warm marshmallow is then "squished" between the crackers, softening the chocolate and creating a deliciously sumptuous mixture of chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker flavors.

Not a camper? No problem! While S'mores are traditionally cooked using a campfire, they can also be made at home in an oven, a microwave, or with a s'mores-making kit.

RUTLAND's favorite variations on this time-tested recipe include substituting the chocolate with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup® or Reese's Pieces®, a Kit Kat®, a Cookies & Cream Hershey® Bar, or even Girl Scout Thin Mints®. There’s also a “S'mores dip” with a layer of chocolate and marshmallows that bakes in the oven, and then you dip graham crackers in it.

To celebrate National S'mores Day, RUTLAND will include a FREE Roasting Stick with each online order placed on August 10 & 11, 2019! Use the Promo Code SMORES to receive your very own Roasting Stick with each order you place at Rutland.com!  Not sure what to order? RUTLAND Rainbow Flame® Crystals, One Match® Fire Starter Gel, and SafeLite® Fire Starter Squares are great ways to enhance your campfire experience!
